Bad Math

Bad Math is a scarf that happened by happy accident. It’s a two-row pattern that you can use for any yarn, any gauge, to make a nice scarf. And while it’s not actually reversible, it looks equally good from both sides. Depending on your yarn choice, you can make it bold and masculine or floaty and feminine.

 

Materials:

Yarn: whatever type you like, but since this is a scarf, don’t use anything too itchy. To make a scarf approximately 7 inches wide and 6.5 feet long, you’ll need approximately 400 yards aran weight yarn (4-5 sts/inch) or 300 yards chunky weight yarn (3-3.75 sts/in). Please do your own math to make sure you’ll have enough yarn before you start this project.

Needles in a size appropriate for your yarn.

Cast on a multiple of 3 sts + 2 that is also an odd number (23, 29, 35, 41, 47, etc.).

Row 1: k1, p1 to last st, k1

Row 2: k2, p1 to last 2 sts, k2

Repeat these two rows until your scarf is long enough.

The red sample was worked using 23 sts and is 7″ wide. If you are using aran weight (or lighter) yarn, you will need to cast on more stitches. Use the gauge listed on the ball band as a guide if you don’t feel like making a gauge swatch.
