Convolution braided i-cord cowl
This cowl looks like complicated cables or entrelac, but it’s actually a very simple project—just four simple strands of four-stitch i-cord, braided together. The singleply super chunky yarn shows off the stitches nicely, and the i-cord grows quickly; this project can easily be made in a weekend.

Embellish basketweave scarves
These two basketweave scarves are worked in slightly different weave patterns for visual appeal. They are knit from gorgeous, soft madelinetosh merino that comes in such beautiful colours it’s almost impossible to choose just two. Knitted-on i-cord edges give the scarves a polished look. Wear them singly under a coat or draped and fastened as a cowl. Or, put two together for a long, interesting scarf that wraps around and around. This project uses Jul Pedestal buttons, which require no buttonholes or commitments. Stick them where ever you please; they add an industrial edge to these otherwise slightly conservative pieces.

Winsome cute pointy hat
This is a fun little hat with a cute pointy top that spirals up into a very short i-cord. It’s made from techno yarn that will keep you warm without weighing you down. Wear it with the brim turned up, or pulled down to keep your ears warm. This is a very quick, uncomplicated project to make. It would be easy to embellish with buttons or felted flowers if you felt the need for something extra.

Bonbon long striped mittens
These striped mittens will brighten even the dreariest winter day. Extra long cuffs will keep your wrists toasty warm even when your sleeves ride up or gusts of wind work their way into your coat. The techno yarn is lightweight but warm and extra-soft. It’s lovely to work with and promises not to pill. Three skeins will easily make a pair of mittens and a hat. The finished mittens are quite stretchy and will fit a variety of adult hand shapes and sizes. Most of the shaping for this quick project is done by changing needle size. For smaller hands and a snugger fit, work the hand using the small needles instead of medium.

Crumple welted neckwarmer
This project is all about letting go and experimenting with textures. Each neckwarmer will be a one-of-a-kind creation! The neckwarmer is worked from the top down, with free-form welts that scrunch up plain stockinette stitch and give it depth and movement. The irregular thickness of the yarn adds to the organic look. Layer it under a jacket for a little extra-stylish warmth.

Apropos cabled fingerless gloves
Fingerless gloves are very useful accessories. They keep your hands warm while you work in a chilly office, browse at a used book store or play the saxophone in the park. They are fun to knit because they don’t involve a big commitment of time or yarn, and one size fits most so you can make them for yourself or give them away as gifts and feel confident that they’ll fit the person who’s going to wear them. The allover baby cable-rib pattern provides extra warmth without adding bulk. They’re thin enough to allow unrestricted movement, but still warm enough for a West-Coast winter.
Difficulty: intermediate
Finished measurements: 61/2”/16.5cm wrist circumference, 6”/15cm hand circumference. These gloves are quite
stretchy and will fit up to 9”/23cm circumference comfortably.
